The great leap forward 1958-1962
This happened over the course of 5 years
Mao's new economic plan
they didn't choose for these people to die, but they did nothing to stop it either
a lot of people didn't even know it happened
china was organized into 28,000 communes
30 million deaths
main factors were:
-great industrial and scientific activity
muscle power used to build dams and irrigation
small communal factories
they decided to produce everything they needed in this commune to become self sufficient
they decided to melt their own steel, but it was useless - they didn't know what they were doing
this took the people out of the farms, which meant there was not enough crop production = FAMINE - huge problem
famine is what killed all these people ( Maos policy)

Summary
The great leap forward took place over the course of 5 years, and it was Mao's economic plan. It caused thirty million deaths, however they didn't plan for this to happen, nonetheless did nothing to stop the deaths from happening. The main factors included great industrial and scientific activity, muscle power used to build damns and irrigation. They started small communal factories, and decided to produce everything they needed in themselves because they wanted to be self sufficient. They melted their own steel, and took people out of their farms jobs. This resulted in not enough crop proaction, which led to a huge famine, eventually killing all those people.
Question: Why did Mao think his plan would be successful? Did he plan on causing so many deaths in the process?
